Oscar de la Hoya checks into rehab
Former boxing world champion Oscar de la Hoya has checked himself into a rehabilitation facility earlier this week and he will be promoting the biggest fight of this century so far from that facility itself.
The former multiple world title holder who is currently the president of Golden Boy promotions has a long history of struggles with alcohol and substance abuse and having checked into the facility, he will not be able to take part directly in the World Boxing Council or the WBC Welterweight Championship match between the titlist Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his protégé Saul Alvarez.
The 40 year old is considered as a flag bearer for the sport and has been seen by many as being the ‘Golden Boy’ of boxing in his native in Mexico as well as in the United States of America. His company is now considered arguably the best promotional company in the rough and tough world of boxing promotions and has so far survived the acrimony after its president admitted to his long battle against substance abuse the first time around.
It seemed that he had overcome his demons but in a stunning relapse, he has fallen prey to substance abuse once again after failing to cope with the demands of boxing promotion where he had to undertake a multi city tour over the last couple of months while promoting the fight between the American and his own compatriot.
Mayweather Jr. will pocket a staggering $ 41.5 million purse just for taking part in the match and it is widely being billed as the biggest showdown since the Mike Tyson – Lennox Lewis battle in the late 1990s.
De la Hoya released a statement through his management group informing his fans about his checking into the clinic to receive treatment for his substance abuse problems.
