News for both Sonnen & Silva fans. The much speculated heavyweight grudge light match between Chael Sonnen & Wanderlei Silva has been announced to take place on 24th May. It would be ghosted at Las Vegas & would serve as co-main event for UFC 173.
UFC boss Dana White has already confirmed the news a week back. The confirmation came after Newark UFC 169 N.J.A mid-weight title battle in between Vitor Belfort & Chris Weidman is declared to headline this pay-per-view event.
It can be predicted to be a fight worth watching as both the fighters are presently desperate to secure a good win now-while Sonnen has been going through in & out of the title contention, Wanderlei hasn’t earned any good win for some days now.
Both Silva and Sonnen are in Brazil at present, training opposite each other in the 3rd series of Brazil Ultimate Fighter event.
Sonne & Silva had been into a simmering scuffle for the past couple of years which is fact is supposed to add on more spice to their upcoming fight in May. The feud is based on Sonnen’s comments about different Brazilian fighters such as Lyoto Machida and Antonio Nogueira- something that wasn’t taken lightly by Silva. It resulted in an infamous on-camera scuffle between the two leading fighters during the filming of reality show Brazil Ultimate Fighter. The UFC President has confirmed about sentencing both the fighters to appropriate punishment following the on-camera scuffle.
Unlike Ultimate Fighter 17th Season, where Sonnen became courtly with his could-be rival Jon Jones, rivalry between Silva and Sonnen is very much fresh and alive. A lot of reports have come to the fore stating that the duo has already traded blows right on the Brazil Ultimate Fighter set.
